Reality TV stars to mingle at Slots’ New Year’s Eve event 12/28/10 05:45 pm Updated: 12/29/10 06:08 pm By Andrew Neff One lives in Chicago. The other lives in Charlotte. He loves seafood. She isn’t a big fan. One loves to be in front of a camera, and while the other isn’t camera-shy, she’d just as soon make her living off-screen. He’s ultra competitive while she’s laid-back and not intense about winning. Apparently opposites really do attract, at least in the world of reality television. Meet Jeff Schroeder and girlfriend Jordan Lloyd of TV’s “Big Brother” and “The Amazing Race” fame. The couple will join Maine band Motor Booty Affair to ring in the New Year at Hollywood Slots Hotel and casino. They’re scheduled to arrive around 8 p.m. and mingle, greet fellow guests, and enjoy the music and the countdown to the new year. Motor Booty is on tap to take the stage at 9 p.m. “Neither of us have been to Maine before,” said Schroeder. A 32-year-old Chicago native. “We weren’t sure what we were going to do for New Year’s Eve, and my agent called and wanted to know if I wanted to do this.” It was a perfect opportunity for Schroeder, who isn’t a huge fan of New Year’s Eve overkill. “New Year’s Eve is overrated. Everyone tries to make it the best night of the whole year, but something always happens and screws something or everything up, and it’s usually more of a hassle,” said Schroeder, who just got back home from filming “Around the World for Free,” a CBS contest promotion project. “I figured why not make some extra bucks, have a good time, visit a state I’ve never been to before, and do it all for free with my girlfriend?” Schroeder said. “With us living so far away from each other, anytime we can grab opportunities to see each other, especially on the company dime, it’s great.” Schroeder is especially looking forward to eating some lobster during his brief stay, but Lloyd won’t be asking him to share. “He’s obsessed about seafood, and I don’t really like it at all. Well, I do like fried stuff like calamari that doesn’t smell or taste fishy,” said the 24-year-old hair salon receptionist and student. “I don’t think I’ve even met anyone from Maine before, so I’m just looking forward to being there, playing slots and having a good time.” It’s ironic how the couple’s imperfect relationship seems to be a perfect fit. “We’re complete opposites,” said Lloyd, a native North Carolinian who won the $500,000 grand prize on Season 11 (2009) of TV’s “Big Brother.” Their 15-month relationship has gone from one extreme to the other, from being cooped up in a house together 24-7 to living 587 miles apart and seeing each other an average of one or two weekends a month. “You always hear about ‘Amazing Race’ breaking people up and stuff like that, but it helped us in our relationship and understanding each other better,” Lloyd said. Well, it did, after they got over wanting to kill each other. “Yeah, that’s true,” Lloyd said with a laugh. “We didn’t even talk to each other for almost a day, but the next day we were better and then we totally stunk up the next challenge, so we just laughed. I mean, we did as bad as you can do, but we laughed about it. We’ve been great ever since.” “It wasn’t at all what I expected,” said Schroeder, who will be keeping his hand in acting and modeling, which he has been doing for 10 years. Schroeder also will be returning to his “regular job” of selling commercial airtime on radio stations early in 2011. Lloyd is finishing up two years of study at a community college and is interested in pursuing a career in dental hygiene. “Having your significant other with you, I wouldn’t recommend it,” he continued. “But we progressed in our relationship and learned a lot about each other from that experience. “I learned to be more patient. Getting through that without killing each other made us stronger.” Lloyd learned it was fun to do reality TV, but she prefers life off-camera. “Regular life is fine for me. It was fun, but I don’t really need to go right back to it. I’m over it,” said the former waitress who was recruited for “Big Brother” by a talent scout while she was working at a restaurant. “Jeff does more of these things than me. “It’s cool to be recognized by people, though. It shocks me sometimes that people still even know who I am or care. I figured you have your 15 minutes of fame and then everyone forgets about you.”

Reality TV Star Visits Area In Latest Role By Claudia Schwab Standing amidst the tall Rockbridge County megaliths known as Foamhenge, Jeff Schroeder wondered just how old they are. That was on Monday, the 103rd day of his round-the-world trip. On Thursday, he is due to be in New York City to appear on “The Early Show” to talk about his globetrotting experiences. But, he still had to get there. Schroeder’s only problem is that he was doing this global trip penniless, dependent on others to get him there. Schroeder, an increasingly popular reality television celebrity known from previous work on “Amazing Race” and “Big Brother,” is the performer/host/subject of CBS Internet show “Around the World for Free.” Episodes of the show can be viewed on CBS.com/world. His brief stay in the Rockbridge area this week was courtesy of Collierstown resident Katrina Flowers. “I just follow the show and put an offer out to have him (Jeff) come to Lexington,” said Flowers, who not only hosted him at her home but drove him around and paid for his airfare to fly from Florida to Roanoke where she met him. Schroeder began the global trip in July from New York. “The object is to get around the world without a penny in your pocket,” said Schroeder. “It’s a show that’s live and 100 percent interactive with the audience and you travel with the help of audience participation. “I’ve always loved travel and wanted to get into hosting so this was a perfect match,” he added. All along the way, Schroeder has had offers of assistance that have helped him travel across Southeast Asia, through Europe and finally, back to America. AT&T sponsored the trip and gave him a smart phone with which to stay connected to his audience and the rest of the world. The trip, however, turned out to be slightly longer than the original 100 days of travel anticipated. “I got stuck in Laos,” he said. “I needed $17 for the bus ticket out and couldn’t get it. I was in a little village and couldn’t get any Internet connection to get audience help. I was stuck there for four days. Finally, I walked to a city and went in a hotel and used a computer.” Just prior to coming to Rockbridge County, Schroeder was in Miami. Although he had had other responses and invitation options of where to go next, Schroeder said he was most intrigued by the one from Flowers. “Katrina’s husband, Robert, is a Lexington police officer and I thought it would be neat to come and ride around in his squad car,” he said. “But, actually, I ended up riding with (Lt.) Bucky (Miller). It was quiet in town Sunday evening since it was during the Halloween trick-or-treat but I got to give out candy and interact with the community.” Flowers had arrived very late Saturday night, actually at 1 a.m. Sunday. “We chilled that night, then the next morning we filmed at Rock Bottom Dairy farm in Brownsburg where we milked cows and got to see the whole operation,” he noted. Even though Schroeder is from the Midwest (Chicago), he had never witnessed a dairy operation in action nor even been on a farm, he said. Monday, Schroeder saw some local attractions such as Lee Chapel and Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. Schroeder said after doing so much overseas travel, it was really refreshing to come to a place like Lexington. “I like Lexington – it has an any-town-USA kind of feel,” he said. When last seen Monday afternoon, Schroeder said he would go to Lee-Hi Truck Stop Tuesday morning to see about getting a ride to New York City where he would wrap up the production and, hopefully, make his Thursday “Early Show” deadline. Asked what was next, Schroeder couldn’t answer except to say, “I look forward to having money in my pocket.”

  • WalletPop Interview w/ ATWFF

Jeff Schroeder finishes going 'Around The World for Free' and visits WalletPop first Jason Cochran Nov 4, 2010 Jeff Schroeder, a popular alum of CBS mainstays The Amazing Race and Big Brother, has just arrived back in America after completing an inspiring challenge to travel all the way Around The World For Free and document it online through videos and photos for a legion of fans who followed his every move. Schroeder left the starting line in New York City in early July, and after 105 days, 13 countries, countless snafus, and incredible connections, he arrived back in Manhattan this week. Schroeder made a beeline for WalletPop.com, where I asked the budget Ulysses how on earth he saw Earth without spending any cash: http://video.aol.com/aolvideo/aol-personal-finance/walletpop-around-the-world-for-free/659515751001 Schroeder, (wearing the vest his girlfriend BB11 winner, Jordan Lloyd, bought him when he passed through in Italy) was accompanied by his producer, videographer, and editor Zsolt Luka, or "Z". He accomplished the same journey, except with the added pressure of having to shoot, edit, and upload video segments as they went. While Schroeder worked to figure out the onward path, often graciously accepting help from strangers who soon became friends, Luka and a third production companion, Josh Bolton, uploaded photos & videos of their adventures daily. After announcing the trip on WalletPop.com, I followed the team closely as they traveled over the summer and fall. Not everyone has a network TV fan base to draw upon in assembling affordable travels, but one of the lessons of his journey is that you don't have to be famous to make friends. After all, outside of America, Schroeder's an unknown. Midway through their odyssey, I noted on my blog the sensitive way that Schroeder handled the financial disparity, even volunteering for a humanitarian group in the poorest provinces of Cambodia. His up-for-anything spirit, which defied a modern American temptation to judge each experience as a product, was just as admirable. But most impressive was watching him navigate the uncomfortable reality of having to ask for freebies from people who were less fortunate than most Americans. In Laos, he is shown going thirsty rather than burdening locals who are all too eager to share the little they have. It convinced me that the way Schroeder traveled was "world class" and I said so. When I published that, the outpouring of praise from his fans proved that far from presenting himself as the Ugly American who presses his advantage, he taught some emotional lessons about the connection between money and brotherhood, and erased the cultural stereotypes that have calcified in the minds of Americans who cannot afford to see other countries for themselves. Because international travel is financially out of reach for many of us, some distasteful and dismissive impressions of other cultures have been allowed to rise unchallenged. Schroeder's adventures, accomplished without a cent, blow those false impressions away.
